Costa Rican Food | Salads | Starters | Appetizers and Soups

It is said that the cuisine of Costa Rica is uninteresting and bland but when a cuisine is famous there is some thing in it that is bound to be interesting. The appetizers and the soups that are eaten by the natives' needs to be specially mentioned, as these are not only tasty but healthy as well, these dishes really help to make the cuisine appealing.

Appetizers

Appetizers are known as bocas in the land of Costa Rica. These are served usually with drinks. These are often distributed free of cost. Even if they are priced it is kept at a bare minimum.

There are some very popular varieties of bocas available. Some of them are-

Tamales- these are cornmeal patties with a stuffing and it is wrapped and then steamed inside banana leaves.
Gallos - tortillas are very common in Costa Rica. Gallos are the tortillas heaped with meat, chicken, beans and lots of cheese.
Ceviche- this is a salad that acts as an appetizer. It is made from marinated seafood.
Patacones- these are fried green plantains that come in the form of chips.

There are also the fried yucca, the tacos, empanadas, and these forms a wonderful meal if one is willing to skip a formal dinner and have these appetizers. All Ticos love to have a snack.

There are huge varieties of snacks that are available on the roads and you can have delectable concoction snacks and sandwiches along with sodas.

There are the arreglados. This particular snack is made from sandwiches that are filled with meat. There are also the tortas and these are served with salad put on rolls.

The restaurants of Costa Rica serve a wider range of appetizers. The chefs often do some experiments and the dishes that result are unique. They try to maintain the flavors and the essences of the Costa Rica and at the same time make some innovative dishes.

The appetizers are the introduction to the main course of food and so these are made in such a manner that it is bound to be interesting. Some of the extremely tasty appetizers are the barbeque spareribs, barbecue pork slices, fried chicken wings, crispy spring roles and deeply fried wonton.
